An Analysis of Pip’s Great Dream Course in Great Expectations and Its Enlightenment

Abstract

Great Expectations which is written in first person is an outstanding novel of a British writer, Charles Dickens. It describes the whole life and mental development of Pip, the novel’s main character. This thesis mainly analyzes Pip’s great dream course from four stages: childhood experience; being the inheritor of a large fortune; knowing the true benefactor; after the cruel reality. In childhood, Pip’s great dream is to be an excellent blacksmith; then Pip desires to be a member of upper class; knowing the true benefactor, all his illusion and expectation shatter; in the fourth stage, Pip seeks the real himself and achieves self-maturity. In these stages, Pip changes a lot. After experiencing twists and turns of life and the course of mental development, Pip is no longer a naive child, and he finally abandons the boy’s vanity and illusion, but retains the essence of goodness. People around Pip and the society contribute to Pip’s these changes. From Pip’s growth experience, people may get some precious enlightenment. The thesis aims not only to help readers have a deep understanding of the content of the novel and its profound theme, but also to remind people of not losing themselves, not worshiping money and social class in pursuit of the unrealistic dreams, and there being no shortcut to realize the dreams. Pip’s growth experience also makes it clear that trust, loyalty and kindness are more important than wealth and social stature.
