大学校训的翻译

摘要：校训是指学校确定的对全体师生员工具有指向和激励意义的、反映学校办学理念的、高度凝炼的词语或名言。大学校训，是学校文化传统和办学理念的沉淀，了解一所大学的校训，可以直接触摸到该校最核心的灵魂和特质。校训是一种相对独特的应用文体,大多源自于儒家经典,名人题词和名言摘录。其结构对仗工整,表达简洁凝练,语言内涵丰富。因此,翻译时必须在遵循校训翻译的“三原则”的基础上,准确地理解原文含义,并结合译入语校训的用词与结构特点,简洁而地道地传达原作的思想内容。

The Translation of University Mottos

Abstract: Chinese university mottos, as a unique type of text, usually have their origins from Confucius scriptures as well as inscriptions and extracts by other renowned individuals. They are symmetrical in structure, terse in expression and profound in implication. And there exist much differences between Chinese and foreign university mottos as far as the education ideal, language structure, aesthetic effect and stylistic feature are concerned, which pose great difficulties to university mottos translation. Based on the analysis of the errors and regrets existing in aesthetic ablation, redundant narration and Chinglish of university motto translation, this paper put forward some tentative solutions: Principle of intertextuality in structure, the Principle of Parallelism in Meaning，Principle of using Appropriate words .
