草原小说，顾名思义是关于草原的小说，可以描写草原的历史沧桑，可以描写草原的民俗风情，可以描写草原的纠葛纷争，总之，以草原为底色的小说，都可以称为草原小说。面对草原，作为知青的张承志与四处漂泊的东北作家端木蕻良，分别创作了《黑骏马》和《科尔沁旗草原》等代表性草原小说。同写草原，张承志笔下的草原安静，而端木笔下的草原狂野。同写草原男性的精神追求，白音宝力格重在对传统文明的探索，丁宁重在对建设新世界的探索 ；同写草原女性的悲剧，灵子和索米娅具有不同的悲剧内容和悲剧模式，而正是二人温柔性格中不同的悲剧因素导致了二人的悲剧。不同的时代背景、不同的人生经历与个人气质，导致了二人草原小说创作的不同。
