当“造意者”金天翮把《孽海花》转给曾朴修改和续写后，小说的文本风貌便更多地受到了租界风气的制约，走向了政治与情欲的双重叙事。小说在叙述晚清内忧外患的政治军事大势的同时，交替进行着男女情欲的私人化叙事，揭示政治与情欲的内在逻辑关系，以情欲来解释晚清历史。情欲因素的参与，使小说中民族主义表达立场存在含混的迹象。曾朴凭借在上海租界所见识的异国风情和获得的西学知识，来构建小说的海外图景，来塑造傅彩云形象。傅彩云在放浪的外形下对个人权力、人生自由的追求，在北京的文化语境中散发着挑战传统妇德的民间活力，但在私德堕落的上海租界，她的情欲放纵便失去了女性解放的先锋意义。
Double Narration of Politics and Desire
——Analyze Nie Hai Hua Adjusted By the Context of Shanghai Concession

Abstract: When the creator of the story -Jin Tianhe handed Nie Hai Hua to ZengPu and let it be polished and continued, the text style of the novel, had been restricting by the tones of the concession, diverting to the double narration of politics and desire. While narrated the situation of political and military, which featured as internal revolt and foreign invasion, the novel alternated the personal narration of desire, which reveals the internal logical relationships of politics. And the history of the later period of Qing dynasty was explained by the desire. ZengPu built the abroad view of the novel and sculptured the characters of Fu Caiyun by means of the outlandish manner he saw and heard in the Shanghai foreign concessions and the Western Civilization he learned. Fu Caiyun ‘s pursuit of the private power and freedom in the figure of dissipate exuded the folk vitality of challenging the traditional female virtues. But in the Shanghai foreign concessions, the personal morals degenerated, so her indulge of desire lost its pioneering significance of women liberation.
