This paper introduces the history, status and tends of our country’s manufacturing industry. With the development of our country’s economy, there is an increasingly demand for rock drills. The cylinder, as one part of a rock drill, whether its machining process appropriate or not will great influence on parts’quality and producting cost. Based on studying a lot of relevant data and papers, the author analyses the machining process of the cylinder. After studying and analyzing of the process and procedure, the author designed the machining process of the cylinder wholly.  The author also analyzed processing and fixture, selected the cutting tool and cutting parametres. By studying the procedure of the maching, this paper designed a clamping apparatus. It studied and analyzed positioning and selection of basis. It also expounded the errors. The paper designed a special purpose cutting tool, designed the structure,gave a technical parater of the tool, and set down the technical requirements. Finally, the paper designed a special fixure ,gave the technical paraters and set down the technical requirements for the special fixture.
