An Exploratory Study of the Relationship between ESL Writing Beliefs and Strategies二语写作信念与写作策略关系探析The researching focus of second language writing should be shifted from “teaching” to “learning”. This study aims at exploring the relationship between ESL writers’ writing beliefs and strategies in the writing process, sketching the writing methods used by the writers with comparatively high writing competence.
The participants included were 37 seniors majoring in English, who have already passed TEM-4 and TEM-8. The questionnaire investigated the use of self-management, social\affective, accuracy and using-mother-tongue strategies and corresponding beliefs among the participants via writing beliefs inventory and writing strategies inventory. SPSS 13.0 was used to analyze the data. Descriptive statistics revealed that the chosen value of strategies was generally lower than corresponding beliefs. One-way ANOVA results showed that the use of four strategies was not of the same frequency. The accuracy group ranked the highest while the L1 group the lowest. Via Pearson Correlations analysis,
