《长日留痕》中扭曲的职业精神的解读

移民作家石黑一雄以自己在英国生活的经历为背景，于1988年出版了小说《长日留痕》。书中主人公为维持称职管家身份拒绝一切人性温暖，错误追求尊严和扭曲职业精神，进而揭示了生活在英国二十世纪中期的职业英国管家的可怜与可恨之处。

The “Dignity” Pursuer                                          --- An Interpretation of Perverted Professionalism in Remains of the Day
Abstract
The immigrant writer Kazuo Ishiguro published Remains of the Day in 1988, basing on his own experiences living in England. The protagonist in this novel rejects any human warmth to keep his identity as a professional butler and he falsely pursues “dignity” and contorts professionalism, which exposes the lamentableness and hatefulness of the British professional butler in the period of mid-twentieth century of England.
This paper discusses the concrete cases of perverted professionalism in this novel, including the following parts: the protagonist’s identity crisis, his unfeeling relation with his father and fruitless love with Miss Kenton. The character’s identity crisis starts from his position of “The Other” and his loss of discourse power. Also, the perverted professionalism of characters directly leads to weak relation in the family. All the protagonist gets in his childhood is merely an occupational tutor rather than an amiable father, thus he always takes indifferent attitude towards his father. Last, he repeatedly turns a blind eye to Miss Kenton’s affection and eventually guards his distorted professionalism at the expense of losing his love.
Through such a multi-perspective and powerful argumentation, the pursuit of “dignity” becomes more ridiculous and unworthy. The character’s professionalism has gone so far that he has to pay everything to maintain his distorted pursuit, which affords readers lessons that merit attention.
