英汉颜色词的文化差异

色彩普遍存在我们的日常生活中。对一个小孩来说,颜色词语可能是他牙牙学语只是最早接触到的词语类型。然而,随着年龄和文化的增长，你会发现这些颜色词不仅用来描述真实的颜色,在不同的情况下也有它们的概念性含义和引申含义。实际上，这些内涵意义普遍存在于我们的生活中,尤其是在一些文学作品中。
当阅读一些包含很多色彩形容词的句子时，人们可能会觉得有点困惑,似乎对于那些句子简单单词,结构和语法都很明晰，但是却无法知晓其具体含义。这种现象几乎存在于所有的人类语言之中。由于地理位置、民族风俗、历史背景、文化、政治、经济等方面的差异，相同的颜色词在不同的语言中可能会有不同的引申含义。这种不同可能让来自不同语言背景的人在交流中存在困难。
针对这一现象,本文将通过举例说明，讨论基本颜色词在英语和汉语之间所表达意义的区别并进一步给出造成这些不同的原因。

ABSTRACT
 
Color terms have been used commonly in our daily life. For a little child, color terms may be one of the earliest words he begins to learn when starting to speak. However, when growing up, one will find that those color terms are not only used to describe real colors but also have their conceptual meanings in different situations and phenomena. Actually, those connotative meanings are not far from our life and they are used frequently in our life, especially in some literary works.
 When reading sentences like “I am browned off, sitting here all day with nothing to do; they treat us white; He lives to a green old age; he has a yellow streak in him; he blacked the words he didn’t want.”, people may feel a little bit confused, for those sentences seem to be simple in words, structures and grammar but the usage of color terms can be confusing. This phenomenon exists not just in English, but almost in all the human languages. Nevertheless, because of the differences among geographic location, national customs, historical background, cultural, politics, economies, the conceptual and connotative meanings of a same color term may be different in different languages, which sometimes, may cause misunderstandings in the communication among people from different language backgrounds.
 Aiming to this kind of phenomenon, this essay will mainly talk about the similarities and differences of basic color terms between English and Chinese by giving some examples, and search the causes of them.
