Politeness, as a symbol of human civilization, is a social-cultural as well as linguistic phenomenon that can be found in all societies all over the world. As a result of the rapid development of the study of cross-cultural communication, people are now getting more and more interested in investigating what politeness is and how to be polite in cross-cultural interaction. As people from different cultures may have different views on what politeness is and how to be polite, misunderstanding or even breakdown may occur if the cultural differences of politeness are neglected in cross-cultural communication. This thesis introduces the main ideas of the theories concerned, namely, Leech's Politeness Principle and Gu Yueguo's politeness maxims, which would be applied to English and Chinese respectively. Through the comparative study between English and Chinese politeness expressions, the author analyzes that the different cultural values between them are the main cause of such difference. The comparative study and analysis of polite behaviors and politeness principles between English and Chinese are expected to be of some help for reference for cross-cultural communication.

摘要:礼貌作为人类文明的体现，它不仅是一种社会现象，也是一种语言现象。随着跨文化交际研究的迅速发展，不同文化中礼貌的概念与内涵及在跨文化交际中如何做到礼貌的得体，越来越多地引起人们的关注。由于人们对什么是礼貌和怎样做才是有礼貌持有不同观点，因此在跨文化交际中，常常会出现一些误解。
本文介绍了理论研究方面所关注的重要观点，即Leech的礼貌原则和顾曰国的礼貌准则，这两种观点分别解释了中英礼貌语用现象。通过对英汉礼貌用语使用异同，阐述了产生这种不同的根源在于两种文化中人们的价值观有所差异。本文通过对礼貌语言比较分析和相关阐述，希望对跨文化交流提供一些参考。
