西奥多•德莱塞是二十世纪美国杰出的作家。他的小说极负盛名，展示了美国各个阶层的生活，尤其是社会下层人民的生活。《嘉莉妹妹》是他的最初的力作，以其详尽真实的展现美国社会历史和生活独领一代文坛先锋。笔者对《嘉莉妹妹》这部名作中的主要人物和人物刻画技巧上进行了细致而全面的分析。
首先，德莱塞笔下的人物真实再现了他的生活经历，嘉莉的原形就是德莱塞的姐姐艾玛。本文着重分析了嘉莉的主要性格，例如她对生活的梦想和希望；她的勇于反抗；她精神的成长和升华，从而突现了一个有很强适应力，能突破社会的性别束缚的独特的自我。
其次在人物刻画技巧上，作者运用了象征和对比的手法，德莱塞运用摇椅，窗户，火车等象征手法组织和连接材料，展示人物的情绪和命运；居住环境对照显示人物命运上的跌宕起伏，而嘉莉和她的姐姐咪尼的对照则凸显出嘉莉的个性。

An Analysis of the Character of Sister Carrie
 
ABSTRACT

Theodere Dreiser is an outstanding American novelist of the 20th century. His critically acclaimed novels chronicle American life in all classes, especially the life of those people in lower class. Sister Carrie is his first novel and also an important one in which he led the way for a generation of writers seeking to present a detailed and realistic portrait of American cultural history and American life. The thesis attempts to analyze of the character of Sister Carrie and some techniques used to create and develop characters.
Firstly, Dreiser's characters are the truthful reflection of his life. The figure of Carrie is a complex compound of Emma (the original model of Carrie). And another important analysis is Carrie’s character. This paper introduces Carrie’s visionary hope, her revolt and her spiritual rise exhibit a self that sets her apart from the gender dictates of her time: her nature is distinguished by resiliency.
Symbols and contrasts have been used as the techniques of characterization. A lot of symbols are employed in the novel, such as the rocking chair, the window, the train and so on. They link the carious episodes together and reveal the emotion and fate of the characters. In addition, the contrast of human dwellings represents the rise and fall of the characters. And the contrast between Carrie and her sister Minnie represent Carrie’s distinctive personalities.
Sister Carrie, the heroine in Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser, came to a big city to fulfill her dream for the purpose of getting rid of poverty. In the character of Carrie, Dreiser endow a woman who manifests a outstanding freedom of mobility that propels her without considering the confines of sex and society.
