ESCAPE WHEN THE WORLD TURNS ITS BACK ON HER: AN INTERPRETATION OF FUZZY RHETORIC IN MISS BRILL

Abstract: In recent years, Katherine Mansfield, as a brilliant psychological female novelist, is gaining increasing importance in the literature world. In her short stories words were usually economic, plots usually simple, and centre characters often roughly sketched. But modernist techniques applied in those texts were deliberate and magnificent, making the whole works of high aesthetic value. Miss Brill is one of the best short stories Mansfield has written, gaining reputation for its deliberate psychological viewpoint and aesthetic description. However, the angles of studies on this story are not various, and the papers dealing with are still lacking formality. So it preserves much room to study more deeply and multiply. This paper will try to dig into the text Miss Brill from the angle of fuzzy rhetoric via a traditional discourse analysis means. From the text level, to be specific, particular word, sentence and rhetoric cases related with fuzziness will be selected out and studied hard. Through this detailed analysis, the aesthetic significance of text is expected to be appreciated. Moreover, the profound theme of Escapism and “The Other” state of the protagonist can be figured out in the context of the story.

——基于《布里尔小姐》中模糊修辞的解读

摘要：近年来，优秀的女性心理小说家曼斯菲尔德在国内外文坛上的地位日趋重要。她的小说通常篇幅精短，且情节和人物刻画都很简单。但曼斯菲尔德细致而纯熟的现代主义叙事手法使得她的小说获得很高的审美价值。《布里尔小姐》是曼斯菲尔德笔下最优秀的短篇小说之一,以其细腻的心理视角和优美的笔触而著称。然，目前关于这篇小说的研究角度不多且相类，缺乏普遍认可度，因而它值得更深入和多角度的研究。本文将运用模糊修辞的理论，通过传统的话语分析方法，深入学习《布里尔小姐》。具体来说，文章从文本角度将对与模糊相关的词句、修辞进行分析，从而欣赏文章的审美意义。另外，通过文本分析，语隐于文章语境中的，也能够得出关于“逃避”的深刻主题和主人公布里尔小姐的“他者”身份。
