Cultural Connotation of Animal Words and Their Translation Methods

Abstract

Animals are friends of human beings from ancient times. Language of all nations contains lots of words denoting animals and so do Chinese and English. In the social development, animal words gradually get their established connotations in all languages even happening and natural phenomena with various animals which are though to represent different characters like people, or serve as omens. Many animals have become a kind of symbol in people’s thinking. And this symbol is reflected in the languages in the background of cultural communication.

The development of human society coincides with the evolution of animals. As a result, there are lots of words concerning animals. These animal words have very different culture connotations according to the different features of different kinds of animals. This essay, by consulting the predecessors' achievements and comparing the similarities and differences of cultural connotations of animal images in Chinese and English idioms, approached to deal with translation principles and methods applied to the translation of animal idioms.

Because of the differences in natural geography, religious beliefs, tradition and customs, fables, myths and arts, English and Chinese animal words reflect their distinctive culture. This paper introduces classification of English and Chinese animal words; it explores the differences between English and Chinese idioms based on different cultures, and discusses the several methods of translating these animal words.
