Film Subtitle Translation of Pride and Prejudice 

Abstract: With the development of Opening-up policy and globalization, the communication of Chinese and foreign culture draws more and more attention. In the past, translation versions of literature are one of the most important methods for us to learn foreign cultures. Nowadays during the fast development of Internet, films and television programs become the bridge of communication between China and foreign countries. And subtitle is regarded as the window of communications between audiences and film programs. Subtitle helps audiences to have a deeper understanding of the film plots. When foreign films and television programs are introduced to China, professional subtitle translators are needed. Therefore, subtitle translation becomes an important part of translation area. With the prosperity of film industry, the audiences have higher requirements to subtitle translation.
   This paper takes the 2005 translation version of Pride and Prejudice as an example to analyse the problems existing in film. And the paper will use some translation theory or strategies like Domesticating Translation and Foreignizing Translation to improve the subtitle translation. At first, the paper analysize the characters of the film like culture, language customs and the way of emotional expressions. Secondly the paper introduces the effect and importance of subtitle in translation. Thirdly, it mainly analysizes the subtitle translation problems in the film and the reason of causing these problems. Thirdly, it mainly analyses the subtitle translation problems brought by cultural differences and wrong emotional expressions in the film and the reasons of causing those problems. It proposes some effective ways to solve the problems. In this part, some translation principles such as Domestication, Foreignization and Nida's Functional Equivalence are used to analyse subtitle translation. Then some translation principles will be indicated, and some translation theories will be used in the translations so that the problems could be solved. The thesis will draw an conclusion that film subtitle could be more and more important and these translation strategies should be adopted in the subtitle translation. At last, the thesis concludes that subtitle translation needs consider many factors and should be paid more attention by the translation circle.

摘要：随着改革开放，全球经济一体化的发展，中外文化的融合与交流引起了越来越多人的注意。在过去，外国名著、小说的译本，是我们学习和了解外国文化传统的重要手段之一。而如今，随着网络的快速发展，影视作品的传播为我们架起了又一座中外沟通与交流的桥梁。而字幕作为影视作品与观众交流的窗口，使观众对电影情节有更直接更深刻的理解。尤其是外国影视作品引进到中国，就需要专业人士对外文字幕进行翻译和考究。那么久而久之，字幕翻译也成为了翻译领域的一部分。随着电影行业的兴起，观众对电影字幕翻译的质量要求越来越高。
  因此，本文将以电影《傲慢与偏见》05年版本为例，分析和指出电影字幕当中出现的问题和缺陷，并采取归化法、异化法等翻译理论和策略，对字幕翻译方法进行更好的完善。本文首先分析电影《傲慢与偏见》的特点，例如文化风俗、语言习惯、当代情感表达手段等。其次介绍了字幕在当代电影界的作用、影响力和在翻译领域越来越受到重视。在第三部分重点分析了《傲慢与偏见》当中字幕翻译的问题。例如文化差异带来的误导、情感表达翻译的偏差等。再者分析了出现这些问题的原因。为什么会导致某些出处造成影迷的误解。通过仔细的分析，才能采取行之有效的解决方案。最后就是根据第三部分提出的问题，提出解决的策略。在这一部分，本文首先提出了几个翻译的原则，然后站在这些原则的基础上，结合归化法、异化法以及奈达的功能对等理论，对其中的字幕翻译进行分析。最后本文观点为字幕翻译必须综合考虑，应该受到业界更多的重视。
