浅析委婉语及其英汉翻译策略

Abstract
In our language, euphemism is a frequent used figure of speech, no matter in Chinese or in English. With the development of cross-cultural communication, the translation of euphemism is becoming more and more important. This paper gives a brief introduction to euphemism, takes the classification and functions of euphemism as breakthrough point, attempts to show English learners plainly what euphemism is and why euphemism is employed in social communication, and also brings forward some main translation strategies of euphemism. Chapter One mainly deals with the main idea of this paper. Chapter Two concerns itself with the definition, classification as well as functions of Euphemisms. Chapter Three, puts forward the problems in the process of euphemisms translation. Chapter Four provides an explanation for Yan Fu’s principle of translation and presents feasible strategies—literal translation and free translation—for euphemism translation. The last Chapter concludes the whole paper.

摘要
在我们使用的语言中，委婉语是一个常用的修辞。汉语如此，英语也如此。随着跨文化交际的日益频繁，委婉语之间的互译变得越来越重要。本文对委婉语进行简单的介绍，从委婉语的定义出发，以委婉语的分类和功能为切入点，尝试向英语学习者阐明什么是委婉语以及委婉语被广泛运用于社会交往的原因，并提出英汉委婉语的翻译的几种主要方法。第一章主要概括了本文的主要内容，第二章介绍委婉语的定义、分类以及其功能；第三章提出了在委婉语翻译过程中可能出现的问题；第四章，首先解释严复提出的翻译原则，接着提出几种可行的翻译策略—直译和意译；最后一章为全文的结束语。
