浅析委婉语的使用和汉英翻译策略
Abstract
Euphemism, a frequently used language phenomenon, is usually employed as a coordinator in the interpersonal relationship. It plays an important part in people’s daily life. Based on the studies done by many scholars at home and abroad, it is agreed that there are three main communicative functions of euphemism: to avoid taboo, to achieve politeness, and to conceal facts. Owing to its great functions, it has penetrated into our life everywhere and it has developed with the society going on. Therefore, further studies on its application are necessary and remarkable. And due to the great difference between Chinese and the western cultures, it’s very important to translate euphemism properly in the cross-cultural communication.
The thesis is composed of four chapters in all as follows:
The first chapter presents the definition of euphemism as well as its studies at home and abroad.
The second chapter is about the application of euphemism from the perspectives of its three main functions and its context. Meanwhile, some misusing activities are taken into consideration.
The third chapter deals with the Chinese-English translation strategies of euphemism, literal translation and free translation, with some examples.
And the last chapter is the concluding part, in which both the significance and limitations of this thesis will be concluded.
This thesis aims to help English learners understand how to appropriately apply euphemism in the corresponding contexts, and furthermore, to master the translation strategies in the communications between different cultures.

摘要
委婉语是发生频率很高的一种语言现象，可以起到协调人际关系的作用。根据中外学者的研究，我们知道委婉语主要有三个交际功能：避讳功能、礼貌功能和掩饰功能。正是由于委婉语强大的交际功能，它的使用己经渗透到社会生活的各个领域，可以说是无处不在。因此进一步研究它的使用是十分必要的、有意义的。同时，英汉文化差异的存在使得英汉交流过程中，委婉语的得体翻译至关重要。本文着重讨论委婉语的使用及其翻译。
本文主要由四章组成。
第一章主要综述了委婉语的定义以及国内外的研究。
第二章从委婉语的功能和使用语境着手探讨它的使用；同时，针对一些委婉语的错用现象进行了分析。
第三章主要从直译、意译这两大翻译策略并辅以一定的实例分析对委婉语的翻译进行了探讨。
最后一部分总结本篇论文的意义和存在的不足之处。
本文希望帮助英语学习者理解如何在相应的语境中正确地运用委婉语，同时在文化交流过程中能够掌握一定的委婉语翻译策略。
