浅析西尔维娅•普拉斯及其小说《钟形罩》

西尔维娅•普拉斯是美国著名的自白派诗人之一。她具有强烈的女性意识。作为一位自白派诗人，西尔维娅•普拉斯提出了新的观点：女性自白。在女性意识的历史长河中，西尔维娅•普拉斯重新用女性自白在文学中诠释了女性主义，并且揭示了现代西方社会女性的悲剧。西尔维娅•普拉斯唯一的小说《钟形罩》被看作是她的自传体小说。在小说里，她谈论了女性的角色并且寻求女性在家庭与事业之间的平衡。通过分析西尔维娅•普拉斯和她的小说，本文主要目的在于探究为什么小说中的埃斯特与现实中的西尔维娅•普拉斯有相同的命运，即使在小说最后看似“大有前途的”未来在埃斯特面前，以及小说中埃斯特强烈女性意识的根源。此外，本文旨在分析女性主义并给予西尔维娅•普拉斯全面的评价。通过研究西尔维娅•普拉斯和她的小说，我们会更好的了解西尔维娅•普拉斯，并且能够明白丧钟为什么不只是为西尔维娅•普拉斯和埃斯特而鸣，而且也为那些困在“屋子”里的女性而鸣。这篇论文可分为四部分：第一部分引言，第二部分谈论文学中的女性主义，第三部分探讨西尔维娅•普拉斯和埃斯特的命运，第四部分总结。

ABSTRACT

Sylvia Plath, one of the most famous representatives of American Confessional Poets, had a strong sense of feminine consciousness. As a Confessional Poet, she created a new perspective: feminine confession. Putting her feminine confession in the history of feminine consciousness, Sylvia Plath re-interpreted feminism in literature and revealed the tragedy of women in modern western world. Her unique novel, The Bell Jar, was regarded as Sylvia’s semi-autobiography. In the novel, she talked about women’s roles and looked for a balance between family and career. By analyzing Sylvia Plath and her novel, this thesis aims to explore why Esther had the same destiny with Sylvia Plath and the root of Esther’s strong feminine consciousness in The Bell Jar, even “promising” future in front of her. Besides, this thesis focuses on analysis of feminism with related materials and comments on Sylvia Plath from a full perspective. For the study of Sylvia Plath and the novel, we will get better understanding about Sylvia Plath and her novel that the bell tolls not only for Sylvia Plath and Esther, but also for those women who are restrained in the “house”. This thesis can be divided into four parts: the first part is the introduction, the second intends to talk about the feminism in literature, and the third part aims to explore Sylvia and Esther’s destiny and the fourth is the conclusion.
