摘要: 厄内斯特•海明威是美国著名的作家，他被公认为二十世纪最杰出的作家之一。在海明威的所有作品中，《老人与海》可谓是最著名的一部。在该小说中海明威揭示了人独自战斗，彰显极大的信心勇气和决心，“重压下的优雅风度”等深刻的主题。小说主人公桑提亚哥也成为文学史上典型的“硬汉”形象。从乐观勇敢、强大的意志力、热爱自然和尊重生命等方面探索老人桑提亚哥的人物形象。通过对桑提亚哥性格的分析读者能够获得巨大的启示：在面对艰难困苦的境遇时，人应该勇敢的拼搏至最后。

On the Characterization of Santiago in
The Old Man and the Sea
Abstract: Ernest Hemingway, a famous American writer, is regarded as one of the most outstanding writers of 20th century. Among his books, The Old Man and the Sea is the most famous one. In this novel, Hemingway explored the themes of man struggling alone with great confidence, bravery, determination and living with “grace under pressure”. The main character Santiago becomes a typical “code hero” in literature. This paper is intended to probe into the characterization of Santiago, the code hero in The Old Man and the Sea, from the following aspects: optimism and courage, strong willpower, love of nature and respect for life, etc. Through the analysis of the characteristics of Santiago, readers can gain a great deal of enlightenment: when facing with difficulty and miserable conditions, man should be brave and struggle to the end.
