Abstract: Since African-Americans were transported to the America, more than three hundred years have passed. During that tragic and bitter period of time, African-Americans never stopped their efforts to achieve their freedom. Through the description of two kinds of heroines, Uncle Tom and George Harris, the novel tells us: Tom, who is resigned to bad conditions, obedient to the slave-owner，is doomed to death; while George who dare to revolt gained a new life and freedom. Therefore, Uncle Tom’s Cabin plays an active function to advance social development, especially in the movement of abolitionist and the American Civil War. In this thesis, I will focus on two kinds of characters and attitudes towards slavery system. My thesis will be divided into four parts. The first chapter is a brief introduction of the author of this world. The second chapter presents the main contents of the novel. The third part, I will give a detailed explanation of relationship between character and fate. The last part is the impact of this novel on the society.
