Thoreau and Taoism本文对梭罗和老子在人与自然的关系，所倡导的生活方式，所持的政治观点进行比较研究，以及梭罗与儒家思想的不同和梭罗对中国古典文化的了解，证明梭罗深受道家思想影响。

ABSTRACT
Because Thoreau quoted many Confucian sentences in his works, many scholars believed that Thoreau was deeply influenced Chinese Confucianism, but few of them cover the influence of Taoism.
This thesis attempts to study the surprising affinities between Henry David Thoreau and Taoism. Thoreau loves nature, and he views “man as a part or parcel of nature” which resembles Taoist idea “the identification of the self with universe”; Thoreau emphasizes on necessity of simplicity, which is identified with Lao Tzu advocacy of returning to simplicity and naturalness; Thoreau believes in the idea “that government is best which governs not at all”, which corresponds to Lao Tzu’s stress on “non-action”(wu wei),i.e. with no governmental interference. Both of them use the symbolism in their works, and the symbolic meanings are almost the same. This writing intends to make a comparative study on the aspects of their attitude toward the relationship between man and nature ,their life style and their political view ,in order to provide evidence that Thoreau who is quite familiar with Oriental philosophy is more or less influenced by Taoism .
