Abstract
Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the most outstanding writers in the literary history of the United States and the whole world. His masterpiece The Scarlet Letter is a milestone in American literature history with its rich imagination, peculiar writing style and thought-provoking insight. Since its publication, The Scarlet Letter has conquered countless receptive through its irresistible artistic charm, which has ever since been inviting serious critical attention from literary critics and further studies.
Hawthorne’s symbolism in The Scarlet Letter is distinctive. Throughout the whole novel, symbolism plays a very important role. Firstly, the symbols are of growing significance. Secondly, the symbols have various implications. Thirdly, the symbols are closely related to the characters and the last, the symbols sparkle the whole story. This technique helps to deepen the theme of the story and fire readers’ imagination. The Scarlet Letter is honored with the first American symbolic novel.
In recent years, there have been a great number of papers studying Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and its symbolism. There are so many symbols in the novel, including: the scarlet letter, the four characters, the stream in the wood and even the forest has the symbolic meaning. This paper will focus on the symbolic analysis of the main characters in The Scarlet Letter.
