《献给爱米丽的玫瑰》的主题意义与写作技巧

Abstract
“A rose for Emily” depicts a love tragedy which has a shocking effect. The short story vividly pictures the declining aristocrats in American South, expresses the author, William Faulkner’s deep emotion about his hometown American South, and encourages us to think over the social roots of the tragedy of Emily’ life. Besides, the thesis will make research on the writing techniques applied by the author such as the inversion of the time, the stream of consciousness, symbolism, and the flexible narrative perspective.
This thesis is generally divided into four parts. The first chapter introduces the author William Faulkner, his literary works, the main idea and present research on “A Rose for Emily”; the second chapter first indicates the social background of the story, then portrays the author’s deep emotion toward American South from three perspectives —the system of Patriarchy, Emily’s love and the fall of the Southern tradition; the third chapter introduces three writing techniques which includes anachronism, symbolic meaning of rose and flexible narrative angle. Finally, the last chapter will have a brief conclusion.
