《红字》中的清教社区

纳撒尼尔•霍桑的名作《红字》是一部充满宗教色彩的作品。通过对清教社会的描绘，霍桑对清教主义做出自己的解读，这成为小说的一大亮点。在这个发生在17世纪清教的新英格兰的通奸故事中，作者下了大功夫来刻画清教社区，其中包括镇上的总督，牧师，普通的清教徒和清教徒的孩子们等。这篇论文主要分析在女主人公生活中扮演着重要角色的清教社区。首先，简要地介绍清教徒和清教主义。然后，正式探析《红字》中的清教社区，研究主要涉及清教社区的所指、霍桑的清教主义的由来和思想、霍桑刻画的清教徒清教特征以及其体现的清教思想、海斯特与清教社区之间的关系和清教社区在《红字》中的作用。对清教社区的研究，从新的一个视角重新解读《红字》这部小说，希望可以帮助读者更为全面地理解这部小说。

The Puritan Community in The Scarlet Letter
 
Abstract: Nathaniel Hawthorne’s masterpiece The Scarlet Letter is full of religious tone and well-known for the writer’s interpretation of “Puritanism” by the portrayal of the Puritan community. In this adultery story that happened in the 17th century Puritan New England, the writer pays great efforts to depict the Puritan community, including the governors, the ministers, the ordinary Puritan women and men, and the Puritan children in the town. In this thesis, the Puritan community is analyzed in depth. At first, The Puritans and Puritanism are briefly introduced. And then the Puritan community is explored. The reference of the Puritan community, Hawthorne’s Puritan origins and minds, the Puritan traits of the Puritan community and Puritanism reflected from Hawthorne’s portrait of the Puritans, the relationship between Hester and the Puritan community and the role of the Puritan community in the novel are involved. By the study on the Puritan community, this paper interprets The Scarlet Letter from a new perspective, hoping to help the readers have a more comprehensive understanding about the novel.
