The Thanatopsis of Emily Dickinson

Abstract: Death is always a popular topic in western literature. Most of the writers considered it as an anguished and helpless thing. For example, Edgar Allan Poe was good at writing horrible short novels by describing the dead or dying people, and Alexander Pope had the words that: “The lot of man-to suffer and to die.” In these traditional thoughts, Emily Dickinson seems distinctive. Emily Dickinson is the greatest female poet in American literature who leaves a large number of questions to the researchers.  In her all 1800 poems, there are about 600 of them writing about death, and in most of the 600 poems, her thanatopsis is optimistic. In works of Dickinson, death can be classified in two ways: the status of the speaker and process of death. And her optimistic thanatopsis treated death as the period which is inevitable and is necessary to immortality. In this essay, by analysis several representative poems of her, we can see more details of classification of the death and the thanatopsis in her poem. We will talk about the thanatopsis from three aspects: the classification, the thanatopsis in her works and the cause of her thanatopsis.
Keywords: Emily Dickinson; death; thanatopsis
