浅析《名利场》中利蓓加与艾米丽亚对待生活的不同态度

  威廉•梅克皮斯•萨克雷是英国批判现实主义代表作家之一,《名利场》被公认为他的代表作。作品刻画了两位截然不同的女性的形象贝基•夏普和艾米丽亚•塞得利。通过书中这两个女性角色,萨克雷探索的是在金钱至上、阶级意识强烈的男权社会中女人的地位角色,抨击了维多利亚时代婚姻家庭观的腐朽以及社会的虚伪。
本文将从五方面展开。第一部分介绍了萨克雷以及他的作品《名利场》;第二部分陈述了十九世纪的社会现实状况;第三部分是本文的主体部分,从多方面研究了两位女主人公——利蓓加和艾米利亚对待生活的不同态度;第四部分探讨了出现在主体部分的不同态度的原因;第五部分是结语,总结了萨克雷所刻画的这两位有着强烈对比意味的女性形象,并且作者认为,这两位女性的形象,来源于萨克雷本人的生活阅历,以及在他所理解到的在他那个时代女性所处的社会地位。

The Analysis of the Different Attitudes toward Life of Rebecca and Amelia in Vanity Fair

Abstract

     William Makepeace Thackeray, the English critical realistic writer, created two impressive and contrasting female images in Vanity Fair: Rebecca Sharp and Amelia Sedley. The novel explores the money-oriented Victorian patriarchal system and the status-conscious world in which women were confined to roles that require their submissiveness and deprive them of power. In the novel, Thackeray attacks the corrupt and hypocritical society, the root of the Victorian virtues of marriage and family.
This thesis develops its arguments in the following five parts. Firstly ,the thesis gives a general introduction about Thackeray and Vanity Fair. The second part states the social realities of the nineteenth century. The third part is the body part, focusing on the image of Rebecca and Amelia and explores their differences in many aspects. The fourth part mainly discusses the reason why they have many differences. Finally, the author draws a conclusion of Thackeray’s portray of these two contrasting women images. The author thinks these two women images come from Thackeray’s life experience and Thackeray’s understanding of women’s position in his time and society.
