William Golding is one of the most prominent British novelists and poets. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983 and his masterpiece is Lord of the Flies, which has given him the best praise. The successful use of symbolism is one of the most remarkable features of Golding in this story. This paper focuses on analyzing symbolism of four important characters and three important objects, which will make the reader understand the characters and the plot of the story better. First, the paper gives a simple introduction of the significance, the thesis statement and the organization of the paper. Second, the paper introduces the previous study on Lord of the Flies in the literature review. Then it analyzes the important characters and objects in the story which are endowed with different symbolism, in order to give a better way to understand the story. The last chapter is conclusion.
