Abstract
The Secret Garden, wrote by Burnett has delighted generations of readers with its timeless appeal.In recent years, this novel has attracted more and more critical attention. The present thesis is a systematic study of the subtle use of symbolism in it. The first part is a short introduction to the author, the novel.The second part describes the previous studies of this novel. And thensymbolic meaning of the title, the characters, the setting and the details is interpreted respectively. Through the detailed interpretation of Burnett’s use of symbolism—first individually and then as an organic whole—this thesis comes to the conclusion that it is the application of symbolism that makes the theme richer and the book more meaningful.
