--Analysis of Scarlett’s Character in Gone with the Wind
Abstract: Gone with the Wind which is written by Margaret Mitchell has been one of the bestsellers and popular with the reader ever since it put out in 1936. It is her first and only novel. This book is drawn from the American Civil War and the reconstruction after the war. The novel is wide spread and well received since 1936. The novel is considered as a very classic work. But many opponents and readers do not agree with that. In their opinion it is not a graceful book and never has the chance to enter the sacred palace of American literature and Scarlett O’Hara the protagonist in the novel is an extremely selfish, vain and pea cocky, greedy and merciless woman who does not hesitate to resort to any means in order to reach her ends. But as time passes, the novel is more and more popular, sweeps the world and has aroused interest of a large number of hypnosis viewers. And the readers are more and more favored the heroine Scarlett.
The paper analyzes Scarlett’s character features by the three periods of manor life, time of war, after war. At the same time, the paper also introduces Margaret Mitchell’s life and the background of story. When Scarlett lives in Manor of Tara, She is carefree, frank and arrogant. She decides to marry with Charles without considering after she failed to propose to Ashley. The Civil War’s broken influences Scarlett’s character deeply. She becomes brave and strong. She overcomes fear and difficult by war, helps wounded soldiers who live in hospital and takes care of Melanie and her baby. Scarlett becomes greedy, grim and stubborn when she faces the destroy of hometown after the war. It can get a conclusion and the viewpoint is also put forward again, Scarlett’s character is half good and bad. And it is because of her dual character that she owns a full soul. We can get that we should change ourselves when the environment is settled. And then we can live better and better.
