萨拉·沃特斯，英国当代备受瞩目的作家之一，是一位十分成功的女同性恋作家，以创作维多利亚时代为背景的小说而出名。她的作品深受读者喜爱，同时，也受到了主流媒体和同性文学评论界的好评。沃特斯用其极具洞察力和流畅细致的文笔为我们描绘了一个又一个维多利亚时代的英国女性反抗压迫、追寻自我、追求真爱的生命历程。
《荆棘之城》是萨拉·沃特斯的第三部作品，于出版同年获得布克奖。这部小说节奏轻快，空灵跳跃，像舞步一般流畅，让人读起来欲罢不能。在来自《简爱》和《呼啸山庄》中阴沉和冷峻的英国乡间城堡之中，在如同《雾都孤儿》般的阴谋迷雾和身世谜团下，欺骗，罪恶，同性的恋情——这一切的表象之下，毫无疑问，是一个关于爱情与自我的故事。唯有爱情与自我，是萨拉反复吟唱的主题。
本文由第一章至第四章和结论四个部分组成。第一章首先简要介绍作者萨拉·沃特斯和她的作品；其次主要介绍了本篇论文所要研究的她的代表作之一——《荆棘之城》；然后，阐述本文选题的目的与本文的基本架构。第二章概述本文所运用的理论基础，即不同分支的女性主义理论。第三章结合萨拉·沃特斯在《荆棘之城》中关于女主人公们如何反抗父权压迫，追寻自由独立，追求真爱，实现自我的历程的描写，分析了其中所蕴含的女性主义理论。结论部分总结本论文的研究内容、意义，进一步阐述写作目的。

Abstract
For centuries, the issue of women has been one of the focus of society all the time. Throughout feminism theories, either radical or calm, there is a basic premise: Women are a rank of oppression and discrimination worldwide. The basis of the feminism concept is that the present society is based on a male-centered patriarchal system.
Sarah Waters, as one of the most highly acclaimed contemporary writers in the UK, is a very successful lesbian writer. She is famous for her novels that are based on the Victorian Age. Her works are loved by readers, and at the same time, her works are well received by mainstream media and homosexual literature critics. Sarah Waters used her insightful and fluent writing style to describe for us that the life process of British women to resist oppression, seek themselves and self-independence, and pursue the true love in the Victorian Age.
Fingersmith is the third work of Sarah Waters and won the Booker Prize in the same year of publication. The fiction is as brisk, ethereal, and smooth as like a dance, which making it possible to read. Under the appearance of deception, evil, same-sex romance displaying in the gloomy and grim British castles as like Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights and the conspiracy misty and the mystery of life, as like Oliver Twist, there is no doubt that it is a story about love and self. Only love and self-independence are the repeated theme of Sarah's works.
This article is composed of four parts which from the first chapter to the third chapter and the conclusion. The first chapter briefly introduces the author Sarah Waters and his achievements, and then gives a brief introduction to his representative work Fingersmith. At the same time, it also explains the purpose, significance and the basic structure of this article. The second chapter summarizes the theoretical basis used in this paper, namely different branches of the feminism theory. The third chapter analyzes the heroines in Sarah Waters's Fingersmith how to rebel against patriarchal oppression, seek freedom and independence, pursue true love and realize themselves. The conclusion summarizes the research content and significance of this paper, and further elaboration of the writing purpose.
