Abstract
Burmese Days is the first novel by the British writer George Orwell. It is based on the author’s real life experience as a colonist in the Burmese colony in the 1920s. This paper uses post-colonialist theory to analyze the protagonist Flory’s colonialist and anti-colonialist self-identity, and points out that Flory’s hovering between the two leads to his tragic fate. Based on the review of previous studies on this novel, this paper introduces post-colonialist theory, analyzes Flory’s colonialist and anti-colonialist self-identity and his struggles between the two combined with this theory, by observing Flory’s relationships with other characters and his inner fluctuations, so as to show the contradiction of his self-identity. It finally comes to the conclusion that this contradiction leads to his tragic fate.
