Jane’s Female Consciousness in Jane Eyre
Abstract
Charlotte Brontë was an outstanding female writer of the 19th century in English literature whose masterpiece Jane Eyre was the representative work of Victorian era that traced the emotional and spiritual development of the heroine. Jane broke the traditional stereotype of women as submissive, dependent and ignorant roles in the 19th century.
Jane Eyre is regarded as the precursor of feminism. According to the feminist studies of Jane Eyre this thesis emphasizes Jane’s female consciousness which was demonstrated thoroughly in the novel.
In the first chapter, the thesis briefly sketches the theory and development of feminism in literary. The rising of feminism in Victorian age offered feminine writers an opportunity to exercise their literary abilities and express their special famine voices. In chapter two this thesis gives a brief introduction of the social background of Victorian age and the personal experience of Charlotte Brontë.
In chapter three, the thesis reviews the development of Jane’s female consciousness it will give readers a panoramic view of the development process of Jane’s female consciousness.
Chapter four describes separately the female consciousness: the pursuit of equality in love, economic independence and autonomy of her own life.
In conclusion, this thesis examines the nature of Charlotte Brontë’s pioneering literary feminism. And via her masterpiece Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë gives the world her special female voice and so many inspirations which will encourage today’s women readers to strive for their own happinesses.
