简•爱与苔丝命运的对比研究

摘  要

《简•爱》与《德伯家的苔丝》自出版以来受到读者和文学评论者的广泛关注和欢迎。作者从女权主义的角度分析了两部作品各自的女主人公—简•爱和苔丝，从而发现了一些她们的共同点和不同点。她们同处于社会的最低层，有着相似的苦难经历，都怀着一颗纯真善良的心和对爱情的美好向往，但结果却截然不同，简爱通过自己的努力最终获得了自己的爱情，而可怜的苔丝却被送上了绞刑架。本论文试着从两位女主人公的性格，各自所处的社会环境和两位作者的写作理念进行对比研究。
论文认为简•爱和苔丝的不同命运在一定程度上反映了她们的创作者所处时代的社会现实、女性地位和女性意识。

A Comparative Study of Jane Eyre’s
and Tess’s Fate
 
ABSTRACT
Jane Eyre and Tess of the D’Urbervilles are two of the most famous novels written by Charlotte Bronte and Thomas Hardy. Since their publication, they have both attracted a lot of attention from critics and common readers. By analyzing the two heroines—Jane Eyre and Tess of the D’Urbervilles, the thesis finds that they have something in common. Both Jane Eyre and Tess are country women at the Victorian period. They are both good honest young women who are at the low social status, and lack of food and clothing. However, their fate is totally different. Jane Eyre gains her love while Tess is finally brought to the gallows. The present thesis analyzes their different fate from the perspective of their different character and social background. The thesis finds out that Jane Eyre’s and Tess’s different fate is to some extent a reflection of the social background and their creator’s different attitude towards women’s status.
