Abstract: Sherwood Anderson is a figure of great importance in the twentieth century American literature. Owing to the influences on many famous writers, he is called "the tutor of the masters". His masterpiece, Winesburg, Ohio, is in high repute worldwide. It is the rare flower in the history of American literature, and remains belletristic hotspot with its unique writing styles and profound themes. It relates the tragedy of a group of nobody struggling in an indifferent society to readers. This paper will present the different characters in the book through the systematic classification as well as profound analysis, dig out primary reasons for their tragic destinies and declare Winesburg, Ohio’s significant influence on the literary world.
