《嘉莉妹妹》的女性主义解读
摘  要

论文试图从女性主义角度对《嘉莉妹妹》进行解读。《嘉莉妹妹》是美国杰出小说家德莱塞最初的力作，自1900年出版后就备受争议，其塑造的嘉莉妹妹也一直是一个颇受争议的人物形象。女性主义者倡导女性在政治、社会地位上与男性平等，在经济上独立而不依赖于男性。而嘉莉妹妹从一个纯朴的乡村女孩逐渐转变为一个物质成功的世俗女性，实际上反映了她从被动到主动，为自己命运奋斗的不懈精神。她对生活的梦想和希望，不屈服命运并与之抗争的精神，展现了一个能突破社会既定性别规范的独特女性形象。嘉莉妹妹虽然取得物质上的成功，但是在男权社会中，女性始终被定义为他者。在男性目光的注视下及男权社会的道德规范标准评判下，嘉莉妹妹只能以“第二性”的身份存在于小说文本之中。

A Feminist View on Sister Carrie
 
ABSTRACT
This paper attempts to analyze Sister Carrie from the perspective of feminism. Sister Carrie, as the famous American novelist Dreiser’s first works, it evokes great controversies since it was published in 1900. The female image of Sister Carrie created by Dreiser also has always been a controversial character. Feminists advocate that female should be equal in political position with male. They should also have the ability of economical independence rather than depend on male. Carrie is gradually shaped from an innocent girl into a successful woman in material. Actually it reflects the unyielding spirit that female strive for their fates on their own. Her dream and desire for life, her spirit of the unyielding determination demonstrate that a particular female figure who can break the restrictions that a patriarchy society suppresses on female and struggle for her own identity. Though Carrie achieves material success, female is always regarded as the Other in the patriarchy society. Under man’s gaze and judgment of morality of a patriarchy society, Carrie only can exist as the second sex in the novel.
