论《儿子与情人》中人物之间的关系

《儿子与情人》是劳伦斯最重要的作品之一。小说中，劳伦斯认为工业文明的最大恶果不仅是破坏了美丽的大自然，也破坏了男人与女人之间的天然关系。本文首先简要介绍了劳伦斯及其《儿子与情人》，接着着重分析小说中人物的关系，即莫瑞尔夫妇，保罗分别与他母亲、米丽安、克拉拉之间的关系，旨在揭露“灵”与“肉”的激烈冲突和揣摩劳伦斯理想中男人与女人之间的关系。莫瑞尔夫妇失败的婚姻导致保罗与母亲之间异化的母子关系。由于母亲的影响，保罗无法实现“灵”与“肉”的和谐统一。他与米丽安的爱表明只重视精神而忽视情感的爱只能导致失败，他与克拉拉的爱则表明只有激情无精神的爱同样不能给人幸福。因此，本文最后结论出只有当人们摆脱“灵”的束缚，达到“灵”与“肉”完美结合，才能实现男女之间和谐的天然关系。

On the Characters’ Relationships
in Sons and Lovers
 
ABSTRACT

Sons and Lovers is one of Lawrence’s most important works. In the novel, Lawrence thinks that the evil consequences of industrial civilization are not only destruction of nature, but also of the natural relationship between man and woman. This thesis, above of all, gives a brief introduction of Lawrence and his Sons and Lovers. Then it tries to expose the fierce conflict between “spirit” and “flesh” and figure out Lawrence’s ideal of relationship between man and woman through analyzing the relationships among the characters, namely, Walter Morel and Gertrude Morel, and Paul’s relationships with his mother, Miriam and Clara respectively. Moral couple’s failed marriage causes Paul and his mother’s dissimilated mother-son relationship. Being influenced by his mother, Paul is unable to achieve the harmonious co-existence of “spirit” and “flesh”. His love with Miriam shows that love which emphasizes “spirit” but ignores “flesh” will only result in failure; whereas his love with Clara indicates that love without “spirit” but passion cannot bring happiness to them. Therefore, this thesis concludes that people can never achieve the harmonious relationship between man and woman only when they have cast off the shackle of “spirit” and achieve the unity of “spirit” and “flesh”.
