——INTERPRETATIONS OF MELANIE'S IMAGE IN GONE WITH THE WIND

Abstract: Melanie is one of the most impressive characters in the novel Gone with the Wind, written by Margaret Mitchell. She does not only play an important role in the development of plot, but also reflect the cultural and social value which the author wants to display in the novel. The current research about her is not sufficient, so there is a large vacancy left for further study. By analyzing the personality traits of Melanie in different social status, together with the analysis of the reasons, this paper tries to demonstrate an image of a Southern lady; meanwhile, it will also explore the intention of the writing under the special social and cultural background in the South.

摘要：玫兰妮是Margaret Mitchell在小说《飘》中塑造的令人印象深刻的人物之一，这一人物不仅在情节的发展中起到重要的推动作用，也充分体现了作者在书中所表达的文化思想和社会价值。由于当前研究的空白，关于此人物的研究具有很高的研究价值。本文通过对玫兰妮在多种社会角色中呈现出的的性格特征及其成因的分析，全面展示玫兰妮的南方淑女形象，以探索在美国南方文化背景下作者刻画这一形象的用意。
