摘  要

本文从文化差异的角度探讨中国食品名称的翻译。文章首先从两种文化各自不同的信仰、习俗以及表现在语言中的词语的语义关联方式入手阐述了中英文化之间存在的差异。文章继而阐发了食品名称所包含的丰富的文化内涵,对食品名称进行了功能分析,指出食品名称的首要功能在于宣传与推销产品自身。文章最后提出,食品名称的翻译策略应由其功能来决定,作为译者,应有充分的文化差异意识,并灵活合理而恰到好处的运用归化和异化两种策略,以及各种翻译技巧,如直译,音译,补充,意译等。

Translation of Chinese Food Names: A Perspective of Cultural Differences
 
ABSTRACT

The thesis deals with the translation of Chinese food names from the perspective of cultural differences. At first, the paper expounds the differences between the Chinese and English culture from such aspects as religion, customs and semantic association patterns. It then proceeds to dig into their cultural connotations, and after offering a functional analysis of food names, it points out that their primary function lies in promoting the sales of themselves, and that translation of food names should be decided by their function. As a translator, we should have a good awareness of the cultural differences, and make a proper and flexible use of such translation strategies as domestication and foreignization, and such translation techniques as literal translation, transliteration, amplification and free translation.
