英文字母的象形含义在词汇联想记忆中的应用The Application of English Letters’ Pictographic Meanings in Vocabulary Association Memory


Abstract

One of the most heated topics of human development in late 1990s is memory method. Records have been made on number memory, circumstance ratio memory and English vocabulary. The universal method of these memory records is association memory. According to world famous physiologist, Pavlov, memory should depend on association, which means establishing new relationship between new knowledge and the existing old one. Domestic association memory method researcher, Mr. Wang Hong-li, is one of the earliest scholars who come up with the idea of applying association memory to English vocabulary memory and has achieved some practical success. Thanks to increasing studies in this field, papers, books, and software on vocabulary association memory have been available in market and some are warmly welcomed by students of all level. Without scientific classification but according to some existing practice, current vocabulary association memory methods include roots association method, affixes association method, story association method and cultural method. So long as association is applied, some other vocabulary memory methods can also be classified as association methods, such as sound association and word association.
According to the author’s study, in the long and lengthening list of association memory, pictographic association memory can be a new member. Mr. Yuan Li, scholar in Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, is one of the pioneers who delved into the study of the pictographic meaning of English letter. In his book, Origin of English Letters, he points out that all the 26 English letters are originated from Phoenician and have pictographic meanings. This thesis centers on the application of the pictographic meaning in association methods (mainly word association, sound association and story association), and provides examples for justification and illustration. With these, the thesis can enrich the existing content of vocabulary association memory method and help students develop a new way of memorizing English words.

记忆术是上世纪九十年代末一个十分热门的话题。许多和记忆术有关的记录在那时写下,如:数字记忆、圆周率位数和英语词汇记忆等。这些记录创造过程中的一个共同点是:都使用联想法。世界著名生理学家巴普络夫认为,记忆需要靠联想,而联想就是在新旧知识间建立联系。王洪礼先生是国内最早提出联想法的学者之一,他提倡用联想法和英语单词记忆相结合。由于联想记忆领域不断出现新的研究,市场上出现了许多和单词联想记忆有关的报纸、书籍和软件,其中一些在学生中很受欢迎。虽然目前对于联想法还不存在一个科学、完整的分类,但就实际应用而言,人们提及较多的联想法包括词根联想、词辍联想、情节联想和文化联想法等。只要在记忆的过程中运用了联想,很多记忆方法都可以归入联想记忆,如谐音法和取词法等。
根据作者个人的研究和实践,象形法也可归入联想法中。中国社会科学院教师袁立先生是国内最先研究英语字母象形意义的学者之一。他在2000年出版了《English说文解字》一书,并在其中指出26个英语字母起源于腓尼基语,而且都具有象形意义。本论文旨在研究英语字母象形意义与联想记忆法的结合运用。通过举例加以解释、说明二者的结合使用。本文研究的意义在于丰富现有的联想记忆法的内容,帮助学生建立一种全新的单词记忆方法。
