女性应该勇于实现自我价值-基于萨克雷的《名利场》中蓓基•夏泼的分析

Abstract

 In Vanity Fair by W. M. Thackeray, Becky Sharp plays a noticeable and disputable role. She’s always recognized as a negative figure in the novel: She’s a careerist, a schemer and an unscrupulous woman. She tries to get to the upper class by fair means or foul. She’s a loser…However, to read the work through and give a deep thought on the author’s writing intentions as well as the specific social environment and background in which Becky is living, we can find: She’s not only active but also full of vitality. She’s courageous to attack the capitalism society although she’s in a weak position around the whole society. Besides, she fully relies on her own strength to pursuit and knit her own dreams. Through analyzing her bright characteristics and giving an in-depth study on the social background she’s living, this paper intends to make a defense for Becky Sharp from different aspects and dimensions, thus to prove that the way she is attacking the society is reasonable and inevitable in some way. Furthermore, she’s in control of the society in a special way. She’s a strong-hearted and independent social practitioner and fighter. We should appreciate and admire her charming individuality: By using well of her abilities and wisdom, taking necessary adventures, she’s courageous to pursuit her dreams and to realize her self-value.

萨克雷的《名利场》中,蓓基•夏泼是最具光彩也是最具争议的一个角色。人们普遍认为她是作品中的一个反面形象：她是一个女野心家、阴谋家、荡妇，为攀附上层社会不择手段，最终是个失败者……然而，仔细研读作品，深入研究作者写作的意图和蓓基所生活的时代和特定的社会环境，我们就会发现：她不仅活跃、富有很强的生命力，身处弱势却勇于向资本主义社会发起挑战，以个人的力量追求和经营自己的梦想。本文从她性格中积极的一面和她所处的社会背景等因素切入分析，从多角度，多层次为她辩护，旨在说明她在进攻社会时的手段有合理性和必然性。她以一种特殊的方式主宰了社会，是个勇往直前的独立的实践者和抗争者， 她这种为了实现梦想去冒险，去发挥聪明才智，勇于实现自我价值的个性也很有魅力，值得欣赏。
