性格决定命运——简爱与珍妮性格对比

摘    要

《简•爱》是英国19世纪著名的女性作家夏洛蒂•勃朗特的代表作,被认为是作者“诗意的生平”的写照,是一部具有自传色彩的作品。《珍妮姑娘》是美国20世纪著名作家德莱塞继《嘉丽妹妹》后的又一部力作,是以德莱塞的一个姐姐为原型创作的。简•爱和珍妮这两个姑娘同样出身贫寒之家, 珍妮容貌出众而简爱相貌平平，在她们各自追求幸福的理想生活的人生旅程中，也同样遇到了很多的困难和挫折，然而最后简爱获得了幸福的结局，珍妮却以悲剧收尾。这是由于她们对待命运和爱情的态度截然不同，不同的性格造就了不同的命运，正如古语有云：“性格决定命运！” 两人对压迫、爱情以及女性经济独立的不同态度彰显了勃朗特的先进性，同时也揭露了在资本主义社会的男权文化条件下女性们成为了牺牲品。
本文旨在对比研究简爱和珍妮的不同性格及由此导致的迥异命运。将从以下几个方面进行较为深入地探讨：对待压迫的不同态度; 对爱情的不同理解; 对经济独立的不同看法; 不同的命运; 根源。本文重点在于揭示不同的性格造就不同的命运并深入分析其背后深刻的人物宿命根源。

Abstract

Jane Eyre is a master piece of the famous British female writer——Charlotte Bronte in 19th century. It’s considered to be an autobiography and a portraiture of the author’s “poetic life”. Jennie Gerhardt is another cutting edge work after the successful work Sister Carrie of the 20th American popular writer Theodore Dreiser and it was created after one of his sister. Although these two heroines were both born in the poor family, Jennie was pretty and Jane was plain, on their way to seek the ideal life of happiness, they both encountered many hardships and frustrations, in the end Jane had a happy ending but Jennie got a tragic one. It due to their totally different attitudes of treating fate and love that that they encountered different fates, which is proved as an old saying goes: temperament is destiny! And their different attitudes towards oppression, love and female economic independence reveals the advancement of Bronte and also exposes that women became the victim under the condition of patriarchal culture in a capitalist society.
This paper aims to study the comparison in temperament between Jane Eyre and Jennie from the following several aspects to study deeply: different attitudes to treat oppression; different understanding about love; different views on economic independence; different fate; causes. This paper focuses on revealling that different temperament makes different fate and probing into its profound fatalistic root-causes.
