A Study of the Characteristics of the Female Language in Desperate Housewives

Abstract: Accompanied by the rise of the feminist movement in the 1970s. Linguists have been studying in the gender difference in language and attempt to discover the main features of female speech. Female language can be seen as a social dialect, reflecting a national women's general social status and social attitudes towards women. Through language, the mirror, we can perceive the female language features manifested in pronunciation, vocabulary and syntax level and further analyzes the causes of it. Researching on female language and gender language helps people have a better understanding in gender communication and intercultural communication.
This paper takes the corpus of latest three seasons as the research object, analyzed the vocabulary and syntax features of female language. Then I analyze the reasons for the characteristics of female language from the point of view of social background, family reasons and western culture. In Desperate Housewives, women prefer to use emotionally strong words and elegant subtle vocabulary. Women tend to use some additional interrogative subjunctive sentences and imperative sentences in syntactic level. Challenging for the traditional taboo and humorous language is the significant characteristics of female language. And it questions the traditional saying that female language is conservative and women are lack of the sense of humor. Language is closely linked to social problems. This paper will analyze the features from aspects of social background, family reasons, western culture and the status of women. Due to the profound cultural and social psychological factors, the characteristics of female language are constantly changing and developing. The real and life female language in Desperate Housewives provide us a good example in exploring characteristics of the female language and also makes us understand the importance of the gender language for interpersonal.

《绝望主妇》中的女性语言特点探究

摘要：伴随20世纪七十年代女权运动的兴起，语言学家们一直在对语言性别差异做深入的研究并试图确定女性言语的主要特点。女性语言可以看成是一种社会方言，反映了一个国家妇女普遍的社会地位和社会对妇女的态度。通过语言这面镜子，我们可以透视一下英语在语音、词汇、句法等层面所表现出来的女性语言特征，并深入分析其产生的根源。对女性语言及性别语言的研究可以帮助人们更好的进行两性交际和跨文化交际。
本篇论文以《绝望主妇》六七八季的语料为研究对象，首先从文体学角度分析了剧中女性语言的词汇和句法等特征，本文接着从剧中人物所处的社会背景、家庭原因和西方文化等方面来分析剧中女性语言之所以呈现这些特点的原因。在这部剧中，女性语言在词汇层面上都体现出了偏向于使用感情色彩浓重的词汇，多使用文雅含蓄的词汇等特点。在句法层面上剧中女性较多的使用到一些附加疑问句、虚拟语气句和祈使句。女性对传统禁忌语的挑战和对幽默语的应用成为了剧中最显著的女性语言特色，对传统认为女性语言保守和不善使用幽默的说法提出了质疑。语言问题和社会问题是紧紧相连的。由于深刻的文化社会心理因素，女性语言特点也在不断的变化发展。《绝望主妇》中的女性语言的真实和生活化为我们探究女性语言的特点提供了一个良好的范例，也让我们从中了解到性别语言对于人际交往的重要性。
