《所罗门之歌》中人名的隐喻和黑人文化传统研究

A Study on Metaphor of Characters’ Names and Black Cultural Tradition in Song of Solomon
Abstract: Toni Morrison is a famous African-American female writer. She is very good at portraying characters，highlighting the theme with special character naming methods. Her masterpiece Song of Solomon reflects this feature. Morrison uses a lot of methods to name the main characters in this novel, such as biblical allusions, homophonic, using meanings of the words, the first letter implied, vocabulary combination, segmentation and morphological approximation. These special naming methods not only reflects the unique African American cultural heritage, but also makes her works contain multiple implications and multiple themes. What’s more, it provides readers the possibility to understand the novel from different angles.
The paper can be divided in two parts. Firstly it analyzes the metaphors of main characters’ names; they are Solomon, Macon Dead, Pilate and Milkman. The second part is about the change of black cultural tradition from the names of metaphor. In the novel, Morrison is deeply rooted in the American black tradition. She tells the tradition of naming and the meaning of the name with the metaphor language.
