On Comparison of Undergraduates’ Extra-Curriculum Reading Habits in Chinese and American Universities
Abstract:The paper makes an attempt to investigate and compare the extra-curriculum reading habits of undergraduates in China and in the United States, taking the situation of students in China Jiliang University and in Temple University as an example. The surveys are mainly on what undergraduates do and how they do during extra-curriculum reading, what’s the difference between them and what the Chinese students can learn from the American students. What’s more, the paper tries to seek out problems and the corresponding causes that the Chinese students are faced in extra-curriculum reading, and discusses the problems and provides some suggestions after the analysis. The major questions for the undergraduates are follows:
1. How much time do they spend on extra-curriculum reading a day?
2. How many extra-curriculum-book reading can they finish in a year?
3. How much does reading cost them in a year?
4. What is the purpose of their extra-curriculum reading?
5. How do they read in extra-curriculum reading?
6. What problems do they have during reading?
7. What are the reading skills they usually apply?
The research is conducted by applying the researching methods of documentary analysis, questionnaire, interviews and data analysis. A questionnaire and interviews as the main researching methods have been done with 280 students and 8 teachers in China Jiliang University and 280 students in Temple University. The results of the research are generally within the expectation due to a pre-collecting of the extra-curriculum reading situations of the two sides. In summary, the similarities and the differences of the reading habits between the Chinese students and the American students have been explored. Based on analyzing the data and information collected from the questionnaire and interviews, the American students read more out of class than the Chinese students. The preference of reading materials and reading purpose are different between them. They meet problems such as lacking leisure time for reading, lacking reading atmosphere and not interested in reading. In general, the extra-curriculum reading habits of the American students are better than that of the Chinese ones. According to the findings, some suggestions are made for the teachers and the students in universities in China to improve and cultivate their reading habits.
