On Feminism In The Golden Notebook

Abstract: The Golden Notebook is one of the masterpieces of Doris Lessing, the Nobel Prize winner for literature in 2007. The book, which is considered as a pillar in the female canon, portrays a “free woman” constantly pursuing for her self-value and quest for life under three plights of writing block, emotional life, and political faith. This novel highlights females’ personalities, explores their psychological needs, and shows their formative experiences. Through vivid description of female’s independent sense and survival plights, the strong female consciousness is profoundly expressed. The novel not only describes women’s pursuit for freedom and self-exploration, but also shows the self-growth during the exploration. The heroine is named Anna. As a writer, she is deeply trapped into writing block; as the supporter for African national liberation movement, she was unable to change the chaotic status quo of the society; and as a free woman who looking forward to a better life, she could not escape from the spiritual dependence on men and emotional need for men in her subconsciousness. In the confusion, Anna was about to near the brink of collapse, feeling the threat of schizophrenia. However, at the end of the story, with the support from Saul Green, an American men with who Anna carries on a love affair, she gets rid of the fetters of sublime emotions, arouses the ability to create in her inner world and begins to rebuild her life objectively and properly. Lessing has showed us a new woman who goes beyond the vision of ordinary women and this new kind of woman knows that besides the traditional roles of mother and wife, there’s other absolutely necessary roles in the society for women to play, and takes strong responsibility for the whole of human society. And the most impressive point of the book is that the author doesn’t stiffly oppose male and female relationships. Lessing considers that male and female are two indispensable parts of the world, both of which have extremely significant impact on the development of human society. What The Golden Notebook searches for is a way to make the harmonious life between men and women come true.
