On Eco-feminism in The Color Purple
Abstract: The movie The Color Purple is an adaption of Alice Walker’s masterpiece novel of the same name The Color Purple. The movie has left a deep impression on the audience. In the movie, the famous director Steven Spielberg states the Journey of Celie, from being enslaved to the awakening of the soul in a unique perspective and expressive description. The first part of the thesis gives a brief introduction of the author and her work. At the second part, it summarizes the theoretical references on the basis of the study of eco-feminism. By offering the background and the major concepts of the eco-feminism, we can know something about this literary criticism method. The third part focuses on the eco-feminism in The Color Purple. The final conclusion describes Alice Walker's good will of building a harmonious coexistence between human and nature, male and female.
The novel describes the suffering life of black women in a patriarchal society, and it also expresses the love and mercy for nature which suffers the same persecution. From the perspective of eco-feminism, we can not only provide new ideas for the study of the novel, but also arouse human's attention to ecological problems.
This thesis aims to provide the inspiration to modern people who are in the ecological and spiritual crisis by analyzing the eco-feminism in The Color Purple, and it also gives the rights for women and nature to speak for themselves. Only when the male and female, human and nature live in harmony, eliminate the prejudice and alienation, respect each other, can we built a wonderful world. That's also the goal, Walker, as a responsible writer; devote her whole lifetime to achieve.
