Awakening from the Slumber
——Sethe’s Changing Process in Beloved

Abstract

 Beloved was written by Toni Morrison in 1987, regarded as a milestone in American literature. In Beloved, on the one hand, Morrison shows the real situation of the black women from a distinctive point view, and demonstrates their pains and sufferings. On the other hand, through the tragic story of Beloved, Morrison also shows people the great strength and self-growth of the black women. In this thesis, firstly, the author mainly explains the background of this thesis. Secondly, the author introduces Toni Morrison and the major stories of Beloved, and some important things and characters, such as, 124 Bluestone and Paul D. Thirdly, the author explains the reasons of Sethe’s slumber, including social causes and personal reasons. Fourthly, the author analyses how the heroine Sethe awakes from the slumber, including unconscious, subconscious and conscious aspect. Finally, the author summarizes the whole paper and its realistic significance. The author hopes to help the readers understand roundly the traits of heroine Sethe and her difficult self-growth. And more importantly, the author hopes the readers can get some growth inspiration.
