An Analysis of the Awakening of Feminist Consciousness in Cat in the Rain
Abstract
Hemingway is famous for his “dauntless man” spirit, so the traditional critics to literature considers him as a real man who thinks women must obey the man’s order without any condition. Some scholars even think him as a misogynist and regard the women in his works as sirens. This thesis makes an analysis of Hemingway’s the Cat in the Rain to reveal his true attitude towards the female. Firstly, the author makes a brief introduction to Hemingway and his Cat in the Rain. Secondly, the author makes a deep analysis of the feminist consciousness, including the definition, the women’s liberation movement and the women’s social status after WWI. Then the author makes an analysis of the awakening of feminist consciousness in the novel, which includes sleeping, reviving and awakening. Based on the analysis of the awakening of feminist consciousness in Cat in the Rain, the author hopes to help the readers know more about Hemingway’s writing style and this works’ profound connotation, and the development of feminist consciousness.
