从乔治•艾略特的主要作品中研究作者的道德观

A Study of George Eliot’s Moral Values from Her Major Works

Abstract

George Eliot is a famous British female writer of the Victorian era. And she has the indispensable status and influence in the history of English literature. George Eliot dares to defy the traditional morality and ideology, which leads to her being exiled. Her works are brilliant treasure in the history of English Literature. This thesis gives a study of George Eliot’s moral values from her major works Adam Bede and Middlemarch. Firstly the thesis gives a general introduction of the social background of Eliot’s time and her life experience. Then the thesis gives readers a general knowledge of her two books Adam Bede and Middlemarch and the main characters’ moral values and the comparison of the several characters’ moral similarities. Finally the thesis sums up George Eliot’s own moral values. The author aims to help readers improve their ability to appreciate literature and have a better understanding of Eliot’s intention in her writing. What’s more, the author hopes to help readers take inspiration from the author’s true moral values in order to make the society much better.
