论《最后一个莫西干人》中美国西部牛仔的原型
19世纪在美国西部掀起的拓荒运动让许多人踏上了远征之旅，西部牛仔作为西进运动的主力军，尽管只经过数十年就已销声匿迹，但其给美国历史带来的影响却愈发深刻，牛仔精神已然成为美国精神的一重要部分。拥有“美国西部小说之父”之称的库柏在他的经典西部小说集《皮袜子故事集》中描写了主人公纳蒂•邦波富于传奇色彩的一生. 库柏所刻画的纳蒂•邦波是美国文学中第一个西部英雄形象，虽然他算不上真正意义上的牛仔，却与后世作家所创作的牛仔形象相似度很高。由此本文旨在通过对《皮袜子故事集》中最成功的一部作品《最后一个莫西干人》中的纳蒂•邦波的人物形象分析，去论证这位西部英雄实为美国牛仔的原型。
该论文主要分为四个部分。第一部分首先介绍库柏和《最后一个莫西干人》的简要情节、文献综述、和该论文的研究意义和目的。第二部分主要分析库柏小说的创作背景（包括时代背景和个人背景），并且介绍牛仔文化以及其所体现的美国精神。第三部分详述库柏在《最后一个莫西干人》中所刻画的纳蒂•邦波的性格和品质，以及他是如何为后世作家创作的牛仔形象打下基础。第四部分作为结语部分，概述本文的不足以及未来的研究方向。

On the Prototype of the American West Cowboy in The Last of the Mohicans
Abstract: As the main force of the Westward Movement, the west cowboy had increasingly deepened impact on American history, despite the fact that they had just existed for decades. Their unique spirit which we call cowboy spirit has become an important part of American Spirit. James Fenimore Cooper, a great master of American western novels, describes the legendary life of Natty Bumppo in his classic western stories The Leather-Stocking Tales. Natty Bumppo is considered the first western hero image in American literature. Although he is not a real cowboy in its true sense, the characteristics he embodies are much similar to those of the cowboy images created by later novelists. Therefore, this thesis focuses on The Last of the Mohicans, the most successful one of The Leather-Stocking Tales, and intends to study the similarities between Natty Bumppo and the cowboy image under the pen of later American writers with a view to suggesting that this western hero is actually the prototype of American cowboy image.
The thesis is made up of four parts. The first chapter consists of a brief introduction of the author and the novel, a literature review, and the research significance of the thesis. Chapter two mainly analyzes the writing background of James Fenimore Cooper’s western novels, the cowboy culture and its embodiment in American Spirit. Chapter three offers a detailed analysis into the characterization of Natty Bumppo in The Last of the Mohicans. Finally, a conclusion is given to summarize the thesis and point out the limitation of the study and suggestions for future research.
