论《红字》中的珍珠

纳桑尼尔•霍桑是19世纪最著名的浪漫小说家之一。他的代表作《红字》，因为从独特的美国式立场讲述了精神和道德问题，一出版便获得了巨大成功。它代表了霍桑文学天赋中最精彩的部分，即用简洁的描述传递相当浓厚的意味。小说中运用了大量的象征主义手法，珍珠便是最典型的一个例子。在这篇论文里，笔者将从以下方面简要分析文章中最神秘的角色-珍珠。珍珠是一个神秘的，令人惊叹的小女孩。她不仅圣洁而美丽，自然天成，在自然中找到慰藉；而且狂野任性，是小说四个主要角色中最神秘的一位。在成人的世界里，她不仅是她母亲的耻辱的象征；她的天真直率更折射出了她父亲的虚伪和自私。而作为一种象征，她是真正的红字，是小说中的一种道德，是自然的一部分，是清教徒眼中的一种反叛，更是霍桑表达他对清教主义否定态度的最佳工具。

Pearl in The Scarlet Letter

 
Abstract: Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the most famous romantic novelists in the 19th century. His masterpiece, The Scarlet Letter, attained an immediate and lasting success because it addressed spiritual and moral issues from a uniquely American standpoint. It represents the highlights of Hawthorne’s literary genius. In The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne uses symbolism a lot, and Pearl is one of the most classic symbols in the novel. In this thesis, the author mainly analyzes Pearl from the following aspects. Pearl, as a mysterious and astonishing girl, she is holy and pure with luxuriant beauty; she is so natural that she finds comfort in nature; she is also the most mysterious character of the four main characters. In the adult world, she is the token of her mother’s shame, and her frankness reflects her biological father’s hypocrisy and selfishness . As a symbol, she is the real scarlet letter, a moral, a part of nature, a rebel in the eyes of Puritans, and the best vehicle to convey Hawthorne’s negative attitude towards the Puritanism.
