Analyzing the Symbolism in Lord of the Flies

Abstract

William Golding is a famous British writer and he won the Nobel Prize in Literature for his novel Lord of the Flies, which is a philosophical novel about human nature. The novel is Golding’s masterpiece created under his decision to help human beings face the darkness of their hearts by revealing the evil side of human nature. Symbolism is one of the most important and effective means in English writing. As for Lord of the Flies, the symbolism is widely used from beginning to the end. All the affections are achieved mainly through usage of symbolism in writing. It is the most successful novel using symbolism and has received hot discussion from its publication. This paper aims at exploring the symbolism of the novel. By analyzing the imagery of the characters and elements in Lord of the Flies, readers understand the usage of symbolism in the novel. In addition, it has showed the author’s superior writing skill and understanding of real life. What’s more, it probes into the theme of the novel: that evil or savagery is universally present in people and civilization.
